How much notice is required to get married?

The Notice of Intended Marriage can be lodged with the celebrant up to 18 months before the wedding date, but not less than 1 calendar month before the wedding date.

I am widowed.  What paperwork is required?

 

Your previous spouse’s Death Certificate must be produced.

 

Please note – all documents must be originals (photo copies are not acceptable), and all documents must be written in English, or a translated copy signed and certified by an accredited translator.

I am divorced.  What paperwork is required?

 

Evidence of the most recent divorce (if more than 1) must be provided.  The can be in the form of Decree Absolut or Divorce Certificate.

Please note – all documents must be originals (photo copies are not acceptable), and all documents must be written in English, or a translated copy signed and certified by an accredited translator.

Who can witness a Notice of Intended Marriage?

 

A list of qualified signatories is noted on page 3 of the Notice of Intended Marriage.

What paperwork/documents are required to get married?

 

Some form of photo ID is required to be sighted by the celebrant, along with proof of birth.  Birth certificates must be provided by those born in Australia, and are the preferred form of proof of birth for those born outside of Australia.

 

For those born overseas who cannot provide a Birth Certificate, an overseas passport (not Australian) is acceptable. This can be an expired passport, but not a cancelled passport.

How early can we book my wedding?

 

Even though the Notice of Intended Marriage cannot be lodged with the celebrant prior to 18 months before the wedding date, your wedding can be booked as early as you like, the earlier, the better to secure your chosen celebrant.
