Many overseas couples choose to come to Australia to get married. And why not, with our beautiful weather and the many stunning locations we have to offer.
There are no residency requirements, and all that is required is that your are free to marry, and are over the age of 18.
We don’t have marriage licences in Australia, however a Notice of Intended Marriage (NIM) must be completed and received by your celebrant at least one month prior to the wedding. The NIM can be downloaded by clicking here. Once this has been filled in, you will need to have it witnessed by a person who falls into one of the categories listed on the back of the NIM, before returning it to your celebrant.
If you are interested in getting married in our wonderful country, please contact me, and I will email you details of what is required, and answer any questions you may have.
Some European countries may require the addition of an Apostille stamp to the marriage
certificate. Please check with your local government authority to confirm if this
is required or not. More information regarding Apostille stamps can be found by
clicking on the following link -
The ceremony must comply with The Marriage Act 1961, and there can only be one legal marriage ceremony. If you have previously married in another country, and your ceremony in Australia is being held for cultural or other reasons, then your ceremony must take the form of a renewal of vows.
Australian residents are able to bring a partner to Australia on a Fiancé Visa. However, it is recommended that you obtain legal advice to ensure that everything is in order, before making any further arrangements.
